وقفت سوسن في شرفة البيت تطل على الفريج والخور البعيد..
بينما كان قلبها يخفق بشدّة، وقد أرخى الليل أستاره على البيوت فغرقت في الصمت والسكينة إلا من بعض النوافذ المفتوحة والتي تضيئها قناديل خافتة..
لا تعرف ما الذي حرَّك أعماقها هذا المساء فجعلها غير قادرة على النوم..
وكانت تشعر بأسى بالغ وقلق لا تعرف مصدرهما..
نظرت إلى السماء التي تناثرت نجومها القليلة في عمق هذا الليل،
وقد خامرها نفس الشعور الذي كانت تشعر به في مصر حين تخلو إلى غرفتها أمام النيل
وتستمع إلى ما يشبه موسيقى السماء ومرور طيف سماوي يناجيها لا تكاد تتبينه.
لم يخطئ شعورها يوماً حين يحدث لها أمرٌ ما، أو تستشعر نُذُر شيء يلوح في الأفق.
غير أنها هذه المرة لم تكن تعرِف ما الذي تخبئه لها السماء، فلم تعد السماء نفسها التي في مصر،
ولا هناك نيلٌ يُردد رجع صدى الطيف الشارد.
