هو بيت صغير جميل في رقعة ساحرة من الريف — ركن قلما يغشاه أحد، من بلاد نورمندي، على مقربة من البحر — تكثر فيه البساتين، وتمتد الحقول والمراعي للماشية، وتستقيم الطرق الظليلة.
والمرء لا يسعه إلا أن يستغرب أن يجد هذا البيت قائمًا هنا، فقد كانت البيوت الأخرى مساكن فلاحين أو أكواخ عمال، ولكن هذا كان منزلًا أنيقًا مبيّضًا، وله نوافذ كالأبواب، وشرفات ذات أسوار من حديد فيه صنعة، وستائر من نسج البندقية، منزلًا للهو والمسرة تحيط به حديقة صغيرة نضيرة، وتعطر جوه الورود والأزهار المنسقة، وترتاح العين إلى الخضرة اليانعة حوله.
