والعطف، بحكم طبيعته، مرتبط في جوهره بالقيم الأخرى المهمة لسعادتنا مثل الحزم ورعاية الذات واحترام الذات والامتنان والحب والثقة والوعي التام والترابط والمسئولية والمودة والإيثار والكرم. ويتأثر العطف بنشأتنا، وخبرتنا في الحياة، ووضعنا الحالي، وسياقنا الاجتماعي، وتصوراتنا. ويمكن تقديم العطف بقصد تخفيف المعاناة، أو باعتباره طريقة عامة لتعزيز المشاعر الرائعة مثل السعادة والشكر والطمأنينة والحب. وهناك شعور بالتقدير المتبادل، والشعور بالوحدة وبالدعم المتبادل.
