ما الثقة؟ هناك الكثير من المعلومات المضللة - والعديد من الأساطير والمعتقدات والتوقعات - عن تعريف الثقة، وكيف يفترض بنا أن نبنيها، ويمكن لتلك المعلومات أن تشعرنا بالتعثر، والدونية، والتوتر، والارتباك! ولإيضاح هذه المسألة المهمة، سأبرز أولًا ما لا ينطبق عليه مفهوم الثقة، ثم سأقدم تعريفًا واضحًا وموجزًا لماهية الثقة - من منظور علم النفس.
إن الثقة ليست نرجسية، ولا تستوجب المصلحة الذاتية المفرطة أو الغرور، فهي تختلف تمامًا عن "الكفاءة الظاهرة" - كأن يبدو شخص ما مؤهلًا وقادرًا على المواجهة من الخارج؛ لكنه يعاني ويشعر بالضغط والقلق من داخله.
إن الثقة الحقيقية لا تنطوي على التظاهر، ولا يمكن أن تُبنى على طريقة: "تظاهر بالشيء حتى تتمكن من إتقانه"، التي تشير إلى أنه يمكنك أن تتحلى بالثقة من خلال التظاهر بالقيام بشيء ما بثقة، وهذا النهج يسهم في انعدام الأصالة (أي التظاهر بغير شخصيتك)، والشعور بالخجل، وإطلاق الأحكام الذاتية؛ لأن هذا النهج لا يقبل شعورك بعدم الثقة، ولا يقبل جهلك بشيء ما، أو أن تواجهك بعض الصعاب، بالإضافة إلى أنه لا يقبل ارتكابك الأخطاء - في حين أن العكس هو الصحيح.
