وهذا الكتاب مختلف، فهو يبدأ بطرح سؤال: "كيف تتعلم فنون القيادة؟"، وكانت الإجابة واضحة خلال بحثنا الذي أجريناه على أكثر من 1000 قائد في كل المستويات: في القطاع العام، والقطاع الخاص، وقطاع الأعمال التطوعية، وهي: إن القادة يستنبطون علمهم من الخبرة، ومن رؤسائهم، ومن أقرانهم، وممن يتخذونهم قدوة، وليس من الدورات العلمية. وهناك بعض الدروس الإيجابية: فنحن نحاول تقليد السلوكيات الفعالة، وهناك بعض الدروس السلبية: عندما ينفجر أحد الرؤساء أو الأقران في نوبة غضب عارمة، نقرر ألا نحاكي هذا الخطأ.
ومشكلة التعلم بالخبرة تكمن في أنها عملية عرضية, فالتعرف على قدوات حسنة، والتعرض لتجارب جيدة سيساعدانك على تعلم الدروس المفيدة، أما التعرف على قدوات غير حسنة، والتعرض لتجارب سيئة، فسيجعلانك تتعلم الدروس المفسدة. ولا يحالف التوفيق الكثير من الأشخاص ليصبحوا قادة من خلال هذه العملية العرضية، وسيساعدك هذا الكتاب على التخلص من العشوائية التي تحيط بهذه العملية التجريبية العرضية, فهو يمنحك إطار عمل لمراقبة التجارب التي تمر بها، والتعلم منها، ويخلصك أيضًا من بعض العشوائية التي تحيط بتلك التجارب، ويجعلك تتعلم بشكل أسرع وأفضل من أقرانك: هذا هو مرشدك إلى تسريع وتيرة توليك دفة القيادة.
وحدد بحثنا المهارات العملية الرئيسية التي لا بد أن يتحلى بها القادة، فلا يوجد قائد يتفوق في جميع الجوانب، ولكنك بحاجة إلى التحلي ببعض نقاط القوة في بعض الجوانب كما أنك بالتأكيد لا ترغب في الفشل في أي جانب آخر.
