آلي سميث كاتبة اسكتلندية، ولدت في إنفرنس عام 1962 لأبوين من الطبقة العاملة، وفي منزل هو إعانة من مجلس المدينة. التحقت بجامعة أبردين، ثم بجامعة نيونهام في كمبريدج، لكنها لم تُكمل دراستها للحصول على درجة الدكتوراه. وعملتْ كمُحاضرة في جامعة ستراثيكلايد، إلى أنْ بدأتْ تظهر عليها علامات الإصابة بالتعب المزمن، فتركت العمل وتفرّغت للكتابة. وهي الآن تساهم بمقالات في الغارديان والسكوتسمان وفي الملحق الأدبي لصحيفة التايمز. هي عضو في جمعية الأدب الملكية. نالت عدداً من الجوائز على كتبها، منها جائزة إنكور على رواية «فندق العالم»، وجائزة مجلس الفنون الاسكتلندية، ورُشّحت لجائزة الأدب وجائزة مان بوكر. وفي عام 2005 نالت جائزة وايتبريد. من كتبها الأخرى ومجموعاتها القصصية: «المُصادفة»، «فتاة وفتى»، «كان ولكن ذلك الحقيقة»، «كيف تكوني كليهما»، «حب حر وقصص أخرى»، «القصة الكاملة وقصص أُخرى»، «الشخص الأول وقصص أخرى». تعيش مع صديقتها في كمبريدج. في روايتها الشهيرة «المُصادفة»، عمدت آلي سميث إلى جعل عنوان كل فصل من فصول روايتها هو الكلمة الأولى من ذلك الفصل، على سبيل المثال، إذا بدأ الفصل: «كانت ميري تطل من نافذة غرفة نومها...»، فإنَّ عنوان الفصل هو كلمة «كان»، وإذا بدأ الفصل: «عندما فتح تشارلز الباب وجد ما لم يخطر على باله...» – فإنَّ عنوان الفصل هو «عندما»، وهكذا. ثم إنَّ العنوان كان جزءاً من النص وليس منفصلاً عنه. أما في الرواية التي بين أيدينا فإنَّ آلي سميث تمادت وجعلت مجموع عناوين فصول الرواية هو عنوان الرواية كلها، وعليه فإنّ العنوان «كان ولكن ذلك الحقيقة» ليس جملة مفيدة بل هو مجموع عناوين فصول الكتاب الأربعة وُضِعَتْ كعنوان للكتاب
