جون بلومار بطلُ هذه الرّواية حدث معه ما يشبه ذلك، عندما اختار إعادة بناء حياته حسب مشيئته لا كما صمُّمها له قدرٌ لا يطلب رأيك في ما يجب أن تكون عليه عائلتك أو بلدُك أو حقبتك.
فكأنّه بذلك أراد أن يريد، أراد أن يساهم في خلق نفسه، أن يخوض تجربة السُمُوّ والصّدق والتّجرّد من الحظّ، ولو جاز اختزال مغامرته الإنسانيّة في جملة واحدة لقلت: "لقد بذل جون بلومار من نفسه دماء الآخرين!".
قد تبدو المفارقة عجيبة وهي تحديداً من بين أجمل ما قد يظل يشغل المخيّلة ويمنح هذه الرّواية جمالاً إستثنائياً.
