هذا أوّل كتاب خرافات وقصص خياليّة يؤلّفه لويجي كابوانا (Luigi Capuana 1915- 1839) كاتب الواقعيّة الحقيقيّة، ومع أنّه كتب الكتاب وعيْنُهُ على أحفاده الصغار فإنّ عينه الأخرى بقيت على قرّائه البالغين.
اعتبر (كان يا ما كان) من أروع أعمال القرن التاسع عشر الأدبيّة في إيطاليا، يقدّم فيه كابوانا عالماً مليئاً بالجنّيّات والسحرة والملوك والقصور والغيلان والسحر، لكنّ لقصصه هذه المليئة بالقوافي والأهازيج الشعبيّة أساساً متيناً في فولكلور بلده، أي جزيرة صقلّية، إنّ كابوانا يستوعب قصصاً رائعة من بلاده وأرضه ويترجمها على شكل إقتراح أدبيّ جديد.
لويجي كابوانا كاتب، وناقد أدبي، وصحافي، من أهمّ أدباء الواقعيّة الحقيقيّة، ولد من عائلة ملاّك ميسورين في إحدى ضواحي كاتانيا، ثانية المدن الكبيرة في جزيرة صقلّية؛ درس في المدارس الرسميّة ثمّ تابع دراسته في معهد برونتي الملكي قرب بلدته، لكنّه ترك دراسته في المعهد لأسباب صحيّة وتابعها بمفرده إلى أن حصل على الثانوية فدخل في كلية الحقوق ثم تركها ليلتحق بحملة غاريبالدي العسكريّة.
أقام أيضاً في مدينة فلورنسة واحتكّ فيها بكبار الأدباء والمفكّرين وأسهم في حركتها الأدبيّة، عندما عاد إلى بلدته في صقلّية ومات أبوه اضطر للعمل في مدارس البلدة إلى أن تمّ إنتخابه عمدة لها، وفي 1902 انتقل إلى كاتانيا ليدرّس في جامعتها ثمّ مات فيها 1915.
أهمّ أعماله الروائيّة كانت تلك التي استلهمها الكاتب من الحياة في جزيرة صقلية ومن شخصيّات وأحداث منطقته والتي عبّر عنها بأسلوب هزلي كوميدي على الرغم من مآسيها، هناك أيضاً الحكايات والخرافات التي كتبها كابوانا والتي تضمّ أهازيج وأناشيد وقصائد شعبيّة من أجمل ما كتب المؤلّف.
