"الكتابة هي الذاكرة"، بهدف حفظ الذاكرة يكتب سعيد الهاشمي روايته هذه، ليحفظ للأجيال القادمة صورة أولئك حلموا بالحرية والعيش الكريم في وطن احبوه ورفضوا التخلي عنه... رفض والد خالد، كما والد الباهية الحصول على جنسية أخرى تمنحهم شروط عيش أفضل، ورفض الجد إستبدال العيش في ظروف قاسية بحياة العمالة للمستعمر الذي يغري الشباب للعمل في خدمته... وحتى مكتوم الذي تربّى وتدرّب على أن يكون أداة قمع بيد السلطة، رفض في النهاية أن يكون أداة في مواجهة شعبه.
أراد الراوي أن يعبّر عن أحلام أولئك الذين يناضلون "لأجل الخير والحب والجمال والحرية والكرامة وما يُعلي من شأن الإنسان" فهؤلاء ليسوا أعداء الوطن، بل هم أولاده الذين يتمسّكون به ويحلمون بوطن قويّ بمحبّة أبنائه: "أكبر خيبة يعيشها الإنساني هي أن يكون غريباً عن ذاته، مبترّئ منها... لا يرتوي من يشرب من يد غيره...".
أولئك هم الذين نزلوا إلى الميدان تدفعهم أحلامهم، نزلوا إلى ذلك الميدان الذي "تحوّل مسرحاً مفتوحاً... ولحظة حقيقة نادرة وشفيفة".
وعبر تصوير هذا الميدان والأحداث التي استتبعته يقدّم لنا الراوي صورة الأحداث التي يرجو ان تُحفظ في الذاكرة فلا يتم تشويه صورة تلك النضالات.
