منطلقاً من الخلفية التي دفعت يهود الفلاشا إلى الهجرة إلى إسرائيل، يسرد حجّي جابر حكاية البؤس الذي يدفع بالشباب في البلدان الفقيرة إلى بذل كل شيء في سبيل الهجرة إلى مكان يعتقدون أنه يؤمن لهم فرصة أفضل في الحياة.
يسرد لنا كيف أن الواحد منهم مستعد للسرقة ولإرتكاب المخاطر، وللكذب وإختراع حياة غير تلك التي عاشها... والهدف واحد: الفرار من البؤس والأمل في حياة أفضل.
هكذا يفعل، داويت الذي لم يكن يهودياً، فيخترع لنفسه شخصية جديدة، مغيّراً اسمه وتاريخه، ويفعل أقسى الممكن حتى يستطيع الخروج مع يهود الفلاشا إلى إسرائيل... وهناك تبدأ معاناة جديدة يكتشفها في المهاجرين سُمر البشرة الذين سبقوه إلى هناك، ويُدخلنا في تفاصيل حياتهم وبؤسهم ومعاناتهم... ثم في حياة وبؤس الذين هاجروا إلى أرض الميعاد مع حلم أنها ستوفّر لهم حياة كريمة...
لكن هذا الوهم يروح يتبدد، وبغير اسمه مرة أخرى ليعيش حياة أخرى... لكن كان هذا لم ينقذه من حالة الخوف التي يعيشها على حياته... ولا من التمزّقات التي يعانيها سواء بسبب لون بشرته أو بسبب كونه مهاجراً...
عبر رواية "رغوة سوداء" سنتعرّف إلى عالم نجهله، سيدخل حجي جابر إلى تفاصيله... إلى عمق أحلام وآمال "داود" ونظرته إلى الحياة والحب... والرغبة الشديدة في التخلص من حياة بائسة.
إنها رواية الأحلام المجهضة على الرغم من كل التضحيات التي يبذلها داويت... حين راح يحلم بعالم أفضل.
