نحن قراء العربية نعلم أن كتاب "كليلة ودمنة" من أدب الهند، وأن "شهرزاد" رواية "ألف ليلة وليلة" قد استعارت بعض لياليها من الهند عن طريق اللغة الفارسية، وأن نوادرنا التي سمعناها في طفولتنا لا تخلو من مسحة هندية، لا نستغرب أن تتسرب إلينا من البلاد التي عرفنا أرقامها وعرفنا أبازيرها، وعرفنا أنها مصدر «المهند» و«الزنجبيل» ، ويخيل إلينا أن العبقرية الهندية التي أوحت إلى شهرزاد ما أوحت من قصص «ألف ليلة وليلة»، لا تزال باقية على عهدها كما كانت قبل عشرات القرون.
وأصدق ما يقال عن هذه الأقاصيص العشرين أنها – مع إتقان الفن – قد أفلحت في تصوير النفس البشرية وتصوير البيئة الهندية. فهي تعطي صورة صادقة من الواقع في الهند.
