ظل ما يعرفه العالم عن مصر القديمة قليلا ضئيلا حتى أوائل القرن التاسع عشر، أي عندما اتخذ نابليون في عام 1798 أهبته لغزو مصر، إذ في الوقت الذي كانت فيه الجنود الفرنسية تحارب المماليك كانت هناك حملة أخرى علمية من الفرنسيين أيضا تجوب البلاد، مهمتها دراسة كل ما يتعلق بمصر.فبحثوا جغرافية البلاد وحيواناتها ونباتاتها وحرفها كما درسوا أخلاق الناس وعاداتهم وآثارهم ونقلوا النقوش القديمة التي كانت وقتئذ ظاهرة على معابد البلاد. وسواء أكان السبب الذي دعا نابليون إلى تزويد حملته هذه بطائفة كبيرة من العلماء للدرس والتدوين هو حبه فعلا للعلم أم كان يريد من وراء ذلك شهرة ومجدا ، فإن هذا العمل سجل في التاريخ بين الأعمال الكبيرة التي قام بها هذا الرجل الفذ فقد تمكن من أن يحرر مصر القديمة من الظلام الذي ظل يكتنفها قرونا .
