تعتبر التغذية العلاجية أحد الدعائم الأساسية في علاج كثير من الأمراض، بل وفي بعض الأحيان يكون العلاج الغذائي هو العلاج الوحيد للحالة المرضية (مثل مرض الفشل الكلوي، ومرض السكر المصحوب ببدانة)، وفي بعض الأمراض مثل مرض السكر يشكل العلاج الغذائي الركن الأساسي أو الدعامة الأولى في التحكم في أعراض المرض والسيطرة على سير الحالة المرضية. كذلك تلعب التغذية الصحيحة دورًا مهمًا بعد إجراء العمليات الجراحية وفي حالات الإصابات المختلفة والحروق والكسور.
والتغذية العلاجية هي التغذية أثناء المرض داخل المستشفى وخارجه. والتغذية العلاجية تعني أيضا بالحميات وتخطيطها وصياغتها عن طريق تحوير الغذاء كماً ونوعاً وكذلك تغيير محتوى الطاقة أو واحد أو أكثر من العناصر الغذائية بما يتلاءم مع حالة المريض .
