على مدى حوالي سبعين عاماً، بعد نكبة 1948، ظلت ذاكرة مدينة يافا مُشتعلة، وهذه الرواية تُعيد صياغة ذلك الواقع البهيّ الذي شهدتهُ المدينة قبل النكبة، لنستعيدَها في أذهاننا مدينةً حيّةً، وحالةً حضاريةً مُشرقة.
أكثر ما يلفت النظر في "صخرة نيرموندا" التسجيليّة المُذهلة للمكان والزمان، إذ تأخذنا الرواية لنعيش تفاصيل تثير الدَّهشة، فنتجوّل في أحياء يافا وحاراتها، بحرها ومينائها، جلبة السفن وحركة البحّارة والعمّال، أسماء الشوارع بمنعطفاتها ونواصيها، محلاتها، مساجدها وكنائسها ومدارسها، ونشهد حراكها الاجتماعي والوطني، والتعدُّدية الإثنيّة والطائفيّة، ومحاكم الانتداب التي لا همّ لها سوى تجريم الفلسطينيين فيما تحمي هجرة اليهود غير الشرعيّة.
تُدخلنا السباتين بيوتَ يافا الحجريّة بسقوفها المائلة المسقوفة بالقرميد الأحمر، ونقف على شرفاتها المطلّة على البحر والمزخرفة بالمشربيات، لنرى صخرة نيرموندا قُبالة جبل القلعة. كان الروائي بارعاً في الوصف حدّ الدّهشة، حتى إن أريج برتقال يافا يعبقُ في ثنايا صفحات الرواية.
تسجيلية مُذهِلة، جاءت ضمن نسيجٍ روائيٍّ مُحكَم، اتكأ على الواقع والرمز والأسطورة، فنيرموندا أميرة يافا التي أسرها الغزاة، وأراقوا دمها على صخرة ظلّت شاهداً على عذاب المدينة، تُنقِذ الغرقى الذين يحذفهم البحر إلى صخرتها فتُنعش حياتهم، ويستمدّ "سعد" قوَّته مِن حكاية "نيرموندا" التي يتشدَّق البحّارة بروايتها.
أما الرمز الرئيس الثاني؛ طائر الوقواق، فيرعاه "داود" ويكاثره، وترفرف طيور الوقواق بأجنحتها وتحطّ على الزّرع وأعشاش الطيور، تخرِّب البيض وتَضَع بيوضها في مكانِه! طائرٌ بصفاته الغريزية توافَقَ في سلوكه مع طِباع "داود" الذي تدفعه أحلامُه للقتل. لكنّ نبوءة "سعد" تُخيف "داود"، فهذا الطائر سينقضّ يوماً على "داود" ويلتهمهُ حتى آخر فكرة في رأسه.
