تتناول هذه الرواية سيرة ذاتيّة وتشكيليّة متخيّلة للفنان المعروف محمود سعيد (1897– 1964) الذي يعد أحد روّاد الفن التشكيلي في الوطن العربي.
تتوقف أحداث الرواية عند عام 1935، وهو العام الذي رسم فيه الفنّان أشهر لوحاته "بنات بحري" (جميلات بحري)، حيث تخرج الجميلات من اللوحة التشكيليّة، ويتشابكن مع الفنان ومع الحياة التي يعاصرنها، مما يُكسب الرواية بُعدا إنسانيًّا وجماليًّا خاصًا، وبُعدًا سكندريا لم يتوقّف عنده الكثيرون ممن تناولوا المجتمع السكندري في أعمالهم، فضلاً عن الأبعاد السينمائية والأدبية والفنية الأخرى التي تزخر بها الرواية، التي تعد أحد أضلاع مثلث العشق في أعمال المؤلف؛ (الماء العاشق، الحجر العاشق، واللون العاشق).
