جوزيف روديارد كيبلينج كاتب روائي وشاعر وقاص بريطاني من أصل هندي ومن أعظم رواد الأدب في القرن العشرين.
حصل على جائزة نوبل في الأدب عام 1907 وأصبح وقتها أصغر وأول كاتب باللغة الإنجليزية يحصل على ذلك التقدير الأدبي المرموق عالميًا.
من أشهر أعماله: كتاب الأدغال، القادة الشجعان، والعديد من القصائد الشعرية البليغة.
تميزت أعمال كبلنج بالملحمية والمغامرة والعبقرية الفياضة التي أثرى بها الحياة الأدبية في مطلع القرن كما قيل عنه، حيث تميز الأسلوب بقوة الملاحظة وأصالة الخيال والموهبة الرائعة للرواية.
وفي هذه الرواية المثيرة
يروى لنا بطل الحكاية "الصحفي المغامر" الذي يتتبع في عمله أخبار الملوك بشكل خاص ومن ثم تسند إليه مهمة للذهاب إلى الهند، وفي عربة قطار الدرجة الثانية يقابل اثنين من الركاب الذين يحملون الكثير من الأسرار. تأخذنا الحكاية إلى بلدة باسم Kafiristan ويطلب الغريبان منه خريطة ووثائق للتعرف على هذه البلدة، حيث يعترفان له برغبتهم القوية في خوض مغامرة غريبة وهي الاستيلاء على مُلك هذه البلدة.. فما الذي سيحدث لهؤلاء المغامرين الثلاثة؟ وهل ستنجح خطتهم الغريبة في الاستيلاء على هذه البلدة؟
