" العبد مرقوبان" صورة للتناقضات التي يمكن أن تطارد البشر دون حق أو إثبات قوي، فهذا العبد مرقوبان كأنه فرانكشتين العصر الجديد تكمن مأساته في قبح وجه، وكما كان الناس يبتعدون عن فرانكشتين وينفرون من قبحه، كان مرقوبان يعاني ذات المأساة، فإلى أين يذهب أو يمضي وقبحه يطارده في كل مكان.
ويعبر مارقوبان عن مأساته ويقول: مثل الشوكة يا أمي مثل الشوكة، بل إن الشوكة أفضل حالاً مني، الشوكة من داخلها تمتد إلى الخارج، وأنا في قلبي الشوكة يا أمي تمتد إلى الداخل، تدمي القلب وتدمي الرئتين وتدمي الكبد تدمي تدمي حتى ما أتنفسه سيصبح شوكاً، بين الزفرة والزفرة لا يخرج غير الشوك، كم أتمنى الآن بأني جئت إلى العالم في سنة الشهقة، كي لا أتعذب يومياً بالوجه الأقبح من فطر القبح.
ولكن الشاعر علي الشرقاوي يجعل من قبيح الوجه المنبوذ من قبل أفراد القبيلة هو البطل الملهم الذي يكون سبباً لانتصار القبيلة على أعدائها.
