مارون بن حنا بن الخوري يوحنا عبّود (1886 - 1962)، كاتب وأديب لبناني كبير.. ولد في عين كفاع (من قرى جبيل).
حياته
في سنواته في المدرسة أبدى ميولا أدبية وتفوق في مجال اللغة العربية كما أصدر في عامه الدراسي الأخير مجلة أدبية أسماها الصاعقة. كان قد بدأ بكتابة القصائد ونشر بعضها في جريدة الروضة. أدخله إلى مدرسة مار يوحنا مارون. التي أمضى فيها أربعة أعوام ولكنه رفض الأستمرار فيها لأن أباه كان يقصد بإلحاقه بها أن يهيأه للحياة الكهنوتية ما رغب عنه مارون ورفضه رفضا قاطعا. بعد ذلك التحق بمدرسة الحكمة حيث أمضى فيها سنتين. وقد وجد مارون في هذه المدرسة الجو المؤاتي لتفتح مواهبه الأدبية كما احتك بعدد من الطلاب المولعين بالشعر أمثلا: رشيد تقي الدين وأحمد تقي الدين وسعيد عقل وغيرهم.
وفاته
توفي مارون عبود عام 1962 عن عمر يناهز السابعة والسبعين.

هي رواية ذات طابع اجتماعي، كتبها رائد النّهضة الأدبيّة الحديثة في لبنان «مارون عبّود»، تتحدّث عن الفلّاحين في ذلك الزّمان وما كانوا يعانونه من فقر وقلّة في المحاصيل، ونكد عيش يصبّه عليهم أميري البلاد، حيث كانت الضّرائب الباهضة لا تبقي لهم من قوت العيش ولا تذَر.
يتتبّع يوميّات الفلاّح التي يبدأها بمشقّة حتى يطلّ عليه المساء، موردًا بعض المواقف التي يتعرّض إليها فتجعله حادّ الطّباع، تحدّق به بعيني القسوة، ممّا يجعله لا يطيق صبرًا بما قد يواجهه، فيصبّ جامّ غضبه على زوجته، وبهذا تحمل الرّواية في طيّاتها أنموذجًا من حياة المرأة، مسلّطًا الضوء بأسلوبه الأدبي السّاخر على نمط الحياة والقيم الاجتماعيّة التي كانت تحكمها، لكنّها امرأة ذكيّة قادرةٌ على التّحايل على ضغوطات الحياة مبقيةً على حسّ الأنثى الذي يجعل من هذا الفلّاح غير قادر على تحمّل الحياة دونها.
يرصد الكتاب مشكلات الرّيف اللبناني الاقتصاديّة والاجتماعيّة بين قوى الشعب وقوى القهر، ويناقش دور الكنيسة في مواجهة هذه المشكلات.
