مارون بن حنا بن الخوري يوحنا عبّود (1886 - 1962)، كاتب وأديب لبناني كبير.. ولد في عين كفاع (من قرى جبيل).
حياته
في سنواته في المدرسة أبدى ميولا أدبية وتفوق في مجال اللغة العربية كما أصدر في عامه الدراسي الأخير مجلة أدبية أسماها الصاعقة. كان قد بدأ بكتابة القصائد ونشر بعضها في جريدة الروضة. أدخله إلى مدرسة مار يوحنا مارون. التي أمضى فيها أربعة أعوام ولكنه رفض الأستمرار فيها لأن أباه كان يقصد بإلحاقه بها أن يهيأه للحياة الكهنوتية ما رغب عنه مارون ورفضه رفضا قاطعا. بعد ذلك التحق بمدرسة الحكمة حيث أمضى فيها سنتين. وقد وجد مارون في هذه المدرسة الجو المؤاتي لتفتح مواهبه الأدبية كما احتك بعدد من الطلاب المولعين بالشعر أمثلا: رشيد تقي الدين وأحمد تقي الدين وسعيد عقل وغيرهم.
وفاته
توفي مارون عبود عام 1962 عن عمر يناهز السابعة والسبعين.

يُعَدُّ هذا الكتاب ذخيرةً أدبية يطرق من خلالها الكاتبُ بابَ الأدب الأصيل في صفحة التاريخ؛ فهو كتاب جامع لكل العصور المفصلية في تاريخ الأدب العربي الذي استهله الكاتب بذكر السيكولوجية النفسية في تكوين الشخصية العربية المُؤلفة لبناء هذا التراث, ثم تطرَّق إلى ذكر فحول الشعراء في العصور الجاهلية, والإسلامية, والعباسية. وبرهن على فحولتهم بذكر نماذج من أشعارهم, كما ذكر الأغراض الشعرية التي تشكلت في كل عصر تبعًا لمقتضيات الواقع الاجتماعي فيه, ثم أفرد الكاتب قسطًا من كتابه للدراسة التي أجراها طه حسين حول شعر المتنبي, ومنابع شاعريته, ولم يكتفِ بذلك, بل تحدَّث عن الشريف الرضيِّ, وفن الموشحات, وأشهر أعلامه. كما ذكر أهمية الشعر عند العرب باعتباره صَفْو الحياة, وومضة الوجدان. واختتم مؤلفه بذكر أحمد شوقي أمير الشعراء المحدثين, ولاغرو في ذلك؛ فقد أراد الكاتب أن يذكر الرأس؛ أي القمة في كل عصرٍ شعري.
