يقول المهدي، معرفًا بروايته: "ماذا سيحدث لو اندلعت حربًا عالمية ثالثة واستخدمت الدول ترسانة أسلحتها النووية؟ يقول العلماء أن الانفجار الناتج عن القنابل النووية سيؤدي إلى تصاعد الدخان والغبار إلى طبقات الجو العليا مما سيتسبب في حجب أشعة الشمس وانخفاض درجة الحرارة بشكلٍ كبير، وهذا يعني دخول الأرض في شتاء نووي، شتاء مخيف قارس يزحف على الكون ويغلفه برداء بارد مظلم."
وتعتبر "الشتاء الأسود" هي الرواية الثالثة التي ينشرها "المهدي"، بعد روايتي "ريم" و"ملاذ: مدينة البعث ، كما له العديد من القصص القصيرة المنشورة بمجلة "فارس" للأطفال، بالإضافة إلى قصة "الأرنب الشجاع".
"وقف زياد وراء الزجاج يراقب النيران المشتعلة في الأفق، وضوؤها الباهت يصل إليه راسمًا جسده في صورة ظلٍ أسود،" يلقي بنظره على العالم وهو يلفظ أنفاسه الأخيرة، فقد بدا أنه لا نهاية لتلك الفوضى والجنون؛ أصبح مشهد الحرائق وصوت الرصاص والمدافع معتادًا بالنسبة له، وفي كل يوم تقترب النيران، وتصل الأصوات إلى مسمعيه أعلى من ذي قبل، كقدرٍ محتوم يقترب ببطءٍ وثبات"
