يقول كريم الشاذلي في مقدمة هذاالكتاب أنا من المؤمنين بنبوة سيدنا وسيد ولد آدم محمد بن عبد الله (صلَّى الله عليه وسلم)، أؤمن برسالته، ومنهجه، وأفكاره، ومعجزاته... غير أنك لن تجد في ما أحكيه وقوفًا عند معجزة، أو تأملًا لآية، أو تبجيلًا مهما زدت فيه؛ فهو فوقه. لقد غالبت نفسي كي أتتبع جانبًا واحدًا أرى أننا الآن بحاجة إلى تأمله. وأكرر، إنه ليس كتابًا في السيرة، وإنما تأمُّل للمسيرة، وتدبُّر للخطوات... بذلتُ جهدي كي أقف على الموثوق منها، وكان ترجيحي في الغالب لما وثّقه «محمد بن إسحاق» في سيرته، والذي أثنى عليه الإمام الشافعي بقوله: «من أراد أن يتبحر في المغازي فهو عيال على محمد بن إسحاق». واستفدت كذلك من كتابات المعاصرين، ولا سيما شيخنا محمد أبو زهرة، ومولانا الشيخ محمد الغزالي، عليهم جميعًا رحمة الله ورضوانه. وأعتذر في الأخير لنبيي الأعظم (صلَّى الله عليه وسلم)، فلو كان شرط الكتابة عنه هو مقياس العظمة لما كتب عنه أحد، ولَاسْتَصْغَر كلُّ مؤرخٍ شأن نفسه إذ ينظر إليه... اللهمَّ إني أحب حبيبك... فاللهمَّ شربةً من يديه، وصحبةً في الجنة...
