عمل القاضي أبو الحسن كتابه (الواسطة بين المتنبي وخصومه) فأحسن وأبدع، وأطال وأطاب، وأصاب شاكلة الصواب، واستولى على الأمر في فصل الخطاب، وأعرب عن تبحره في الأدب وعلم العرب، وتمكنه من جودة الحفظ وقوة النقد، فسار الكتاب مسير الرياح، وطار في البلاد بغير جناح، وقال فيه بعض العصريين من أهل نيسابور: (أيا قاضياً قد دنت كتبــــــــه* وإن أصبحت داره شاحطه) (كتاب الوساطة في حسنه* لعقد معاليك كالواســطه) قال صاحب كشف الظون: (أما القاضي أبو الحسن فأنه ادّعى التوسط بين خصوم المتنبي ومحبيه، وذكر أن قوماً مالوا إليه حتى فضلوه في الشعر على جميع أهل زمانه، وقوماً لم يعدوه من الشعراء وازدروه غاية الازدراء، حتى قالوا إنه لا ينطق إلا بالهوى، ولم يتكلم إلا بالكلمة العوراء، ومعانيه كلها مسروقة، فتوسط بين الخصمين وذكر الحق من القولين) وهو في حديثه يراوح في الفصل الواحد بين الخصوم والمتعصبين، كاشفاً للخصوم عن محاسن المتنبي ومعجزاته، ملوحاً للمتعصبين بعثراته وسقطاته، وكلا الفرقين كما يقول إما ظالم له أو للأدب فيه. طبع الكتاب مرات عديدة
