ابن السكيت (186 - 244 هـ = 802 - 858 م)
يعقوب بن إسحاق، أبو يوسف، ابن السكيت: إمام في اللغة والأدب.
أصله من خوزستان (بين البصرة وفارس) تعلم ببغداد.
واتصل بالمتوكل العباسي، فعهد إليه بتأديب أولاده، وجعله في عداد ندمائه، ثم قتله، لسبب مجهول، قيل: سأله عن ابنيه المعتز والمؤيد: أهما أحب إليه أم الحسن والحسين؟ فقال ابن السكيت: والله إن قنبرا خادم علي خير منك ومن ابنيك! فأمر الأتراك فداسوا بطنه، أو سلوا لسانه، وحمل إلى داره فمات (ببغداد).
من كتبه «إصلاح المنطق - ط» قال المبرد: ما رأيت للبغداديين كتابا أحسن منه، و «الألفاظ - ط» و «الأضداد - ط» و «القلب والإبدال - ط» و «شرح ديوان عروة ابن الورد - ط» و «شرح ديوان قيس ابن الخطيم - ط» و «الأجناس» و «سرقات الشعراء» و «الحشرات» و «الأمثال» و «شرح شعر الأخطل» و «تفسير شعر أبي نواس» نحو ثمانمائة ورقة، و «شرح شعر الأعشى» و «شرح شعر زهير» و «شرح شعر عمر بن أبي ربيعة» و «شرح المعلقات» و «غريب القرآن» و «النبات والشجر» و «النوادر» و «الوحوش» و «معاني الشعر» صغير وكبير

أنه كنز من أنفس الكنوز النادرة، وأنه أحسن كتاب ألف في اللغة وآدابها حتى أن بعض العلماء قد عده من الكتب الفذة والفريدة
يعالج داء " اللحن " والخطأ الذي كان قد استشرى وترسخ في لغة العرب التي هي لغة القرآن.
فعمد إلى تأليف كتابه هذا وضمنه ابوابا ضبط بها جمهرة من لغة العرب وأنه جمع في كتابه هذا الالفاظ المتفقة في الوزن الواحد مع اختلاف المعنى، أو المختلفة فيه مع اتفاق المعنى، وما فيه لغتان أو اكثر، وما يعل ويصح وما يهمز وما لا يهمز، وما يشدد وما تغلط فيه العامة، ومع ملاحظة أن المقصود " بالمنطق " المعنى اللغوي له في تسمية الكتاب يعلم بالوضوح ان قصد المصنف من تأليف هذا الكتاب كان الاصلاح في منطق العامة ومعالجة
وكل ما جاء في هذا الكتاب، الكلمات المستعملة التي ينبغي لكل عربي ان يعرفها
