قال عنه الحافظ ابن كثير - رحمه الله - في البداية والنهاية: " المشهور بالتصانيف الكثيرة، النافعة، الشائعة، الذائعة في الرقائق وغيرها، وكان صدوقاً، حافظاً، ذا مروءة ".

إن المقصودَ بــ "التوثُّق بالعمل" هو إتْباعُ هذا الشعورِ بالجانبِ التطبيقيِّ له، وتأكيدهِ بالعملِ القويم، وقد يَجْمَعُ هذا لفظُ "التوكُّل".
ومن عرفَ ما ينتظره، واستشعرَ الخوف؛ توثَّقَ من أمره، فتحصَّن، وشاور، وتدبَّر ما حوله، وانهمكَ في العمل، حتى يحصلَ على مبتغاه.
ولا يتوانى فيضعف، أو يتكاسلُ فيندم، أو يتواكلُ فيفوتُه مقصودُه.
والأمرُ جِدّ، والحذرُ لازم، والمطلوبُ الحزم.
لكن المقصود من كتاب ابن أبي الدنيا هو التوجُّهُ إلى المسلم كونهِ مسلماً، وليس تحديدَ خليفةٍ وأبنائه، أو تعيينَ أميرٍ وأعوانه، أو قصدَ والٍ وحاشيته.
