قال عنه الحافظ ابن كثير - رحمه الله - في البداية والنهاية: " المشهور بالتصانيف الكثيرة، النافعة، الشائعة، الذائعة في الرقائق وغيرها، وكان صدوقاً، حافظاً، ذا مروءة ".

ففيها نجد صفات الجنة والنار، أهلها وحديثهما، أعمالهم وجزائهم وغير ذلك من تفاصيل معيشتهم ومنازلهم وأطمعتهم وأزواجهم، وزعزهم على أنها تجرى من تحتها أو تصبهم في جهنم وبئس المصير ونعوذ بالله من هذا المصير، هذه الصفات والتفاصيل هي ما نجده في هذا الكتاب.. مختصاً بصفات جهنم.. النار والعياذ بالله.. فهو يقدم لنا في صفحاته وصف جهنم وسعتها وجيالها وأوديتها، والسلاسل والأغلال وبكاء أهل النار وشرابهم من الحميم والصدير.. أنها جهنم تلفح وجوههم وهم فيها كالحون.. ولا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله.
