قال ابن أبي يعلى: له التفاسير الدائرة والكتب السائرة.
وقال الذهبي: جامع علم أحمد ومرتبه.
من كتبه (تفسير الغريب) و (طبقات أصحاب ابن حنبل - خ) قطعة منه، و (الحث على التجارة والصناعة والعمل - خ) في دار الكتب و (السنة) و (العلل) و (الجامع لعلوم الإمام أحمد) في الحديث، قيل: لم يصنف في مذهب مثله، نحو مئتي جزء .
