مكانته:
قال الذهبي: الحافظ المحدث، الثقة المعمر المصنف.
قال أبو يعلى الخليلي: ابن الضريس ثقة، وهو محدث ابن محدث، وجده يحيى بن الضريس من أصحاب سفيان الثوري.
وقال أبو حاتم بن حبان: كتبنا عنه، وكان ثقة صدوقا.
قال بعض العلماء: سمعت محمد بن أيوب يقول: آخر قدمة قدمتها بالبصرة أديت أجرة الوراقين عشرة آلاف درهم.
قال الذهبي: مات ابن الضريس يوم عاشوراء، سنة أربع وتسعين ومائتين بالري.
ولما سمع أبو بكر الإسماعيلي بموت ابن الضريس ـ وكان يود أن يرحل إليه ـ صاح ولطم وقال لأهله: منعتموني من الرحلة إليه.
