إنه ليس معي إلا ظلالها، ولكنها ظلال حية تروح وتجيء في ذاكرتي، وكل ما كان ومضى هو في هذه الظلال الحية كائن لا يفنى، وكما يرى الشاعر الملهم كلام الطبيعة بأسره مترجمًا إلى لغة عينيه، أصبحت أراها في هجرها طبيعة حسن فاتن مترجمة بجملتها إلى لغة فكري.
كان لها في نفسي مظهر الجمال، ومعه حماقة الرجاء وجنونه، ثم خضوعي لها خضوعًا لا ينفعني … فبدلني الهجر منها مظهر الجلال، ومعه وقار اليأس وعقله. ثم خضوعها لخيالي خضوعًا لا يضرها …
وما أريد من الحب إلا الفن، فإن جاء من الهجر فنّ فهو الحب …
كلما ابتعدت في صدها خطوتين رجع إليّ صوابي خطوة …
لقد أصبحت أرى ألين العطف في أقسى الهجر؛ ولن أرضى بالأمر الذي ليس بالرضا، ولن يحسن عندي ما لا يحسن، ولن أطلب الحب إلا في عصيان الحب، أريدها غضبى، فهذا جمال يلائم طبيعتي الشديدة، وحب يناسب كبريائي ودع جرحي يترشش دمًا، فهذه لعمري قوة الجسم الذي ينبت ثمر العضل وشوك المخلب، وما هي بقوة فيك إن لم تقو أول شيء على الألم.
أريدها لا تعرفني ولا أعرفها، لا من شيء إلا لأنها تعرفني وأعرفها … تتكلم ساكتة وأرد عليها بسكوتي. صمت ضائع كالعبث، ولكن له في القلبين عمل كلام طويل …
