كان الأدب، في سالف الزمان، يعني الشعر في المحل الأول، وكانت الرواية بدعة محدثة ألصقت بالسيرة والتاريخ بما لا يجعل منها أدبًا أصيلًا، وشكلًا عاميًا لا يرتفع إلى مصاف الدوافع الراقية للشعر الغنائي أو الشعر الملحمي، ولكن انقلب الوضع في القرن العشرين، وتفوقت الرواية على الشعر، سواء من حيث ما يكتبه الكتاب أو يقرأه القراء، وهيمن القص على التعليم الأدبي منذ الستينيات، ولاتزال الناس تدرس الشعر بالطبع، فهو مطلوب في أحوال كثيرة، ولكن الروايات والقصص القصيرة احتلت محل المركز من المنهاج الدراسي، ولا يرجع ذلك فحسب إلى تغير أولويات الاهتمام أو تفضيل الجمهور القارئ الذي يبهجه اقتناء القصص، ونادرًا ما يقرأ القصائد، فقد تصاعدت دعوة النظرية الادبية والثقافية إلى أن يحتل القص المكانة المركزية في مجالات النظرية، والحجة على ذلك أن القصص هي الطريق الأساسي الذي نتعقل به الأشياء، سواء في تفكيرنا بحياتنا من حيث هي تقدم متتابع يفضى إلى مكان ما، أو في معرفتنا بما يحدث في العالم.
