في روايته "سيرة مسلم في حانة آرتين" يفتح الروائي علي نصار نافذة على بيروت أثناء الحرب الأهلية اللبنانية وبعد انتهائها، لقد أخلص عنوان الرواية لمحتوى متنها، حيث جاء معلناً عن حكايتها، ودالاً على مكانها، "حانة آرتين" الكائنة في شارع الحمرا في بيروت، وهي الحانة التي لاذت بها الرواية فضاءً جاذباً لشخصياتها ومحكياتها، تضاف إليها حكاية "مسلم" وهو والد الراوي، الذي عاش في شبابه حياة الفقر والقلق النفسي، ثم انتقل مع اندلاع الحرب الأهلية من "النبعة" في بيروت الشرقية إلى بيروت الغربية، وتعرف هناك على أحد رجال الأعمال، ثم تزوج إبنته نيكول، وكوّن ثروته باللعب على جميع حبال الإنتماء الديني والسياسي والعسكري، أما ابنه "مسلم" العائد من برلين إلى بيروت لينجز بحث ماجستير حول "القواسم المشتركية بين الإيمان والإدمان" فيختار لبحثه زبائن حانة آرتين عينة للدراسة وهؤلاء هم أبطال الرواية (بولس حداد، عيسى سعيد، حسن الهرش، نيكول، زينب، وآرتين صاحب الحانة)، هؤلاء سيحضرون داخل أحداث الرواية بشخصياتهم المؤتلفة والمختلفة، ليشكلون حالة خاصة من مجتمع المدينة، في العالم المرجعي الذي تحيل إليه الرواية ..
في ظل هذه الأجواء، يعيش بطل الرواية الذي سيكتشف بعد وقت في بيت عائلته مخطوطاً يحمل إسم "سيرة مسلم" وقد تنبه إلى أنه مخطوط عن سيرة أبيه وهو يتنقل من صالات سينما البورنو ومجلاته إلى حلقات الدين في مصلى الشيخ الحلي، ليعيش حالاً من التناقض، تتخللها لعبة التجارة السياسية مع زعماء عرب، ومع التجارة والربح، يتحول إلى البحث عن الحب لدى زينب التي رفضته لعلاقتها الخاصة بزوجته نيكول، حيث تكشف الرواية عن العلاقة "المثلية الجنسية" لدى المرأة مجسدة في نيكول وزينب، وهي علاقة لم تكشف حتى نهاية الرواية ... إضافة إلى تناقضات أخرى تقولها الرواية وعليه، تشكل هذه الرواية، أنموذجاً لجيلين، جيل الحرب، وجيل ما بعد الحرب، ومواجهة بين قوى سياسية يسارية وعلمانية وحزبية، تبحث عن مصلحتها، ولا تبحث عن وطن.
