الرواية هى ثلاثية تبدو وكأنها قارب يحمل بين جوانبه أزمنة وأمكنة عديدة تربط بينها فصول، فى الجزء الأول يظهر الموت مرارا فى البداية ملازما للبطل الرئيسى الذى وجد نفسه فجأة فى صحراء جرداء لا يعرف كيف ومتى جاء إليها وقد أعطاه القدر فرصة تلو الأخرى كى يظل حيا ليخوض غمار مغامرة فى قلب الصحراء، ويأتى الجزء الثانى يؤرخ لفترة زمنية وسيرة ذاتية لواحد من الشخصيات الهامة التى أثرت على الساحة المصرية الاجتماعية والسياسية فى ثلاثينيات وأربعينيات القرن المنصرم،ثم يبدأ الجزء الثالث عن تلك الفتاة التى نشأت وحيدة فى مجتمع قاس أصبح لا يرى فى الانسان إلا ما يملكه فى جيبه، لتبدأ أحداث القصة فى الترابط بين ما حدث فى الاربعينيات للباشا المغامر وما حدث فى الجزء الأول لبطل الرواية الرئيس.
