التقيتُ آباء كثيرين لا يدخرون جهدًا أو مالًا أو عواطف لمساندة أبنائهم واحتواء مشاكلهم والبحث عن أي وسيلة تخفف عنهم الألم وتساعدهم على تحسين قدراتهم، وإن تنقصهم المعلومات والخبرة فإنهم يبحثون عن مصادرها ليحققوا أعلى درجة دعم لأولادهم. على الجانب الآخر، قابلتُ آباء وأمهات يسيطر عليهم الاكتئاب، أو الإحساس بالذنب ولوم أنفسهم، أو الغضب والإلقاء بالمسئولية على شخص ما، لما آل إليه مصير طفلهم ويغلب عليهم العِناد في الاعتراف بآدميته، فيعاملونه بقسوة لا يُعامل بها “الحيوان”! ومع ذلك فإن الصورة ليست سوداء تمامًا، لأنني لاحظتُ من خلال التواصل المباشر مع عائلات الأطفال المتأخرين أن بعض الأسر التي تُكن مشاعر سلبية للطفل، يتغير موقفها إيجابيًّا بعد خضوعهم لجلسات إرشاد نفسي حتى يتخطوا مرحلة الصدمة، لأنهم في النهاية بشر يحتاجون إلى المساندة النفسية. وراعيتُ في الكتاب أن يكون سلسًا مبسطًا ليناسب كل الأُسر من مختلف الفئات الاجتماعية، يأخذ بيدهم نحو فهم ظروف أبنائهم والمشكلات التي تواجههم وكيف نخفف منها
