يتناول «محمود سامي البارودي» في ديوانه الشعري شتَّى الأغراض الشعرية التي تُبَرهن على حذاقته في نظم الشعر؛ فيجمع في هذا الديوان بين الفخر، والحماسة، والهجاء، والمدح، والغزل، والحكمة، وكأنه يُحْكِمُ أركان دولته الشعرية بواسطة مزيجٍ متفردٍ يجمع كل الأغراض الشعرية في دار ندوة الشعر البارودية، ويُعدُّ هذا الديوان خير متحدثٍ بلسان نفس رائد مدرسة الإحياء والبعث؛ حيث إن كل قصيدة فيه تُجسد الحالة النفسية لهذا الشاعر الذي أحيا الشعر من مرْقده، وكانت أشعاره صيحةً باعثةً لمجد الشعر الذي سيظلُّ مَدِينًا لرب السيف والقلم الذي مجَّده وأولاه مجدًا من زُخْرُفِ النِّعَم.
