محمد كامل حجاج: كاتبٌ مصري، عمل بالمحاكم المختلطة شطرًا كبيرًا من حياته. تمتَّعَ بذوق رفيع؛ حيث كان له هوًى برعاية الأزهار النادرة، والموسيقى الشرقية. أجاد اللغة الفرنسية، وله عددٌ من الكتب منها: «الموسيقى الشرقية ماضيها وحاضرها ونموها في المستقبل»، و«بلاغة العرب»، و«نباتات الزينة العشبية»، و«خواطر الخيال وإملاء الوجدان». تُوفِّي عامَ ١٩٤٣م.

تُعَدُّ المُوسِيقى لُغةَ الرُّوح؛ فهِيَ تَسمُو بالوِجْدانِ الإِنْسانِي، وتُطهِّرُ النُّفُوس، وتُهذِّبُ الأَخْلاق، وتَرْقَى بالقِيَمِ الجَمَاليَّةِ والذَّوْقيَّةِ للمُجْتمَعات، فهِيَ ليسَتْ مُجرَّدَ أَصْواتٍ مَسْموعةٍ نُحِسُّها، لكِنَّها أَصْواتٌ تَتذوَّقُها القُلُوب، وتَهِيمُ بِها العُقولُ في عالَمِ الخَيَال. إنَّها تَجْسيدٌ حَيٌّ للخَيالِ في الوَاقِع، فمِنْها يَستطِيعُ الإِنْسانُ تَجاوُزَ عالَمِه المادِّيِّ ليُحلِّقَ في فَضاءِ الرُّوح. وفي هَذا الكِتابِ يَتناوَلُ المُؤلِّفُ تَارِيخَ المُوسِيقى الشَّرْقيَّة، وتَدرُّجَها، وتَطوُّرَها مُنْذُ ظُهورِها حتَّى أَوائِلِ القَرْنِ العِشْرِين.
