الحَكْيُ أحد أمتعِ الفنون الأدبية، وأكثرِها شعبية، وأحبِّها إلى النفوس، فهو المتعة التي يتشاركها طرفان؛ طرفٌ يَحكي وطرفٌ يُحكَى له، وثالثتهما هي «الحكاية» التي تجري على لسان حاكيها في ساعةٍ من ساعات الشغف، محمَّلةً بأصداء الموروث، وخبرات الآباء والأجداد، لتتسلل بلطفٍ إلى السامع، يطربُ لمعانيها طربًا لا يقلُّ عن طربه بحُلو صياغتها وجميل عبارتها. وفي هذا الكتاب الذي يضمُّ بين دفَّتيه ثلاث عشرة حكاية، يحكي «مجدي صالح» حكاياته نثرًا مسجوعًا سهل الألفاظ، يتخلله أبياتٌ من المنظوم، فإذا بالقارئ يستمع إلى حكاية المنشغلين بالمناصب عن الصحاب، وحكاية الرجل البخيل تقابلها حكاية الفارس الكريم، حكاية اللص المنصف تقابلها حكاية الشريف الغادر، حكاية المروءة وطيب الطويَّة تقابلها حكاية الخلاعة وسوء الأخلاق، حكاية من يطاوع نفسَه، وحكاية من يقاوم يأسَه.
