رواية "الكبرياء والهوى" تعد محطة فارقة في تاريخ الأدب الإنجليزي بشكل خاص وفي تاريخ الأدب العالمي بشكل عام ، فرغم أن الرواية نشرت لأول مرة في عام 1813م إلا أنها الأكثر حضورا وشهرة في روايات جين أوستن ، حيث تعد علامة مهمة في تاريخ الأدب الإنجليزي .
وقد تحولت الرواية إلى العديد من الأعمال الدرامية ما بين السينما والمسرح والتليفزيون حتى فاقت شهرتها أعمالا كبيرة أخرى منذ ثلاثينيات القرن الماضي حتى آخر فيلم تم انتاجه في العام 2005 وهو الفيلم البريطاني الذي أخرجه جو وايت ، وكانت بطلته الممثلة البريطانية كيرا نايلتي والتي رشحت لأوسكار عن أحسن ممثلة عن دورها في الفيلم.
وربما كان من أكبر مآثر جين أوستن أن فتحت الباب أمام المزيد من النساء الموهوبات في فن القص والرواية وسط حرفة رفيعة كانت مقصورة أو تكاد على الرجال الموهوبين .
