وعلم النفس الحديث ينظر إلى النفس خلال هذه الوظائف، فيَعتبر أن هذه الوظائف «النفسية» هي مظهر النفس، أو بعبارة أخرى أنَّ النفس مجرد تسمية لجانب من جوانب الإنسان باعتباره كائنًا حيًّا، فكأنَّها «الوسَط» الذي تحدث فيه هذه الوظائف؛ إذ إنه من العسير أن نتصور قيامها بدون وسط تحدُث فيه.
