التأليف للمسرح علم من العلوم منذ عهد أرسطو ومنذ عهد هوراس، بل هو كان علما غير مكتوب قبل أرسطو وقبل هوراس، بل هو كان حاسة سادسة عند اسخيلوس وسوفوكلس ويوريبيدز من أساطين الشعراء والمسرحيين اليونانيين، كما كان حاسة سادسة عند سنكا وبلوتس وتيرنس من أساطين المسرحيين عند الرومان، وعند مارلو وشكسبير وأوسكار ويلد وشو وغيرهم من فحول شعراء المسرح الإنجليزي وكتابه، وعند كورنبي وراسين وكوكتو وغيرهم من عباقرة الشعراء والكتاب الفرنسيين، وعند ابسن وتشيكوف وجوجول من كتاب أوربا الخالدين ، وعند سدني هوارد ويوجين أونيل وجورج كوفمان وغيرهم من كتاب المسرح الأمريكي .
التأليف المسرحي عند هؤلاء وهؤلاء له قواعده الأساسية متعارفة بينهم، لا يكادون يشذون عنها، ولا تكاد هي تغيب عن بصائرهم، ولذا فإن تأليف المسرحيات مادة تدرس في بعض الجامعات الأمريكية، والجامعات الأوروبية أيضا.
