المراهقة مرحلة عمرية تختلف من فرد إلى آخر، ومن بيئة جغرافية إلى أخرى، ومن سلالة إلى أخرى، ومن سلالة إلى أخرى، كذلك تختلف باختلاف الأنماط الحضارية التى تيربى فى وسطها المراهق، فهى فى المجتمع البدائى تختلف عنها فى المجتمع المتحضر، وكذلك تختلف فى مجتمع المدينة عنها فى المجتع الريفى ، كما تختلف من المجتمع المتزمت الذى يفرض كثيراً من القيود والأغلال على نشاط المراهق، عنها فى المجتمع الحر الذى يتيح للمراهق فرص العمل والنشاط، وفرص إشباع الحاجات والدوافع المختلفة.
ولقد دلت التجارب على أن النظم الاجتماعية الحديثة التي يعيش فيها المراهق، هى المسؤولة عن حدوث أزمة المراهقة، فمشاكل المراهقة فى المجتمعات الغربية أكثر بكثير من نظيرها فى المجتمعات العربية والإسلامية، ولكن لا يعنى ذلك أبدا أنه من الممكن أن تكون هناك مراهقة بدون مشكلات، إلا أن الاختلاف يمكن فى حدة وشكل هذه المشكلات، لتبدو هذه المرحلة فى ثلاثة صور، وهى ، المراهقة السوية، والمراهقة الانسحابية، والمراهقة العدوانية، من الممكن أن تمر هذه المرحلة بأقل المخاطر، وذلك بإتباع طرق التعامل التربوية القويمة مع المراهق، ليشب ويعبر إلى بر الأمان سويا معاف من كل الأمراض والمخاطر، التى كثيرا ما يتعرض لها المراهقين ممن لا يجدون الرعاية الكافية ، فى أسرهم ومجتمعاتهم التى يعيشون فيها.
