الدراسات الاقتصادية الإسلامية تعالج الاقتصاد (كمذهب ونظام) أي دراسة ما يجب أن يكون ، ذلك أنه لا يهم الإسلام تفسير الظواهر الاقتصادية واستخلاص قوانينها، وإنما الذي يهمه هو تحديد أهداف النشاط الاقتصادي، وكيفية تنظيم ذلك النشاط.. وهنا يبرز الاقتصاد الإسلامي الذي يوجه النشاط الاقتصادي، وينظمه على ضوء تعاليم الإسلام، بحيث يتميز عن (الاقتصاد الحر) بأشكاله الرأسمالية المختلفة وعن (الاقتصاد الجماعي) بأشكاله الاشتراكية المختلفة.
وليس في (الاقتصاد الإسلامي) كما في (الاقتصاد الحر) أو (الاقتصاد الجماعي)، سوى مذهب اقتصادي واحد، يتمثل بالنسبة للاقتصاد الإسلامي، في تلك الأصول والمبادئ الإسلامية، حسبما وردت في نصوص القرآن والسنة ، وأنه في حدود المبادئ والأصول الاقتصادية -(إسلامية) كانت أو (فردية) أو (جماعية)- تختلف التطبيقات أو النظم الاقتصادية باختلاف ظروف الزمان والمكان.
