نبتت عندي فكرة تاريخ حياتي، منذ أول عهد شبابي، فقد رأيتني أدون مذكرات يومية عن رحلاتي، وعن حياتي في الأسرة وأيام زواجي. ووجدتني أسجل في المفكرات السنوية أهم أحداث السنة، وما يسوء منها وما يسر، ولكن لم يكن كل ذلك عملاً منظمًا متواصلا، بل كان يحدث في فترات متقطعة - ثم نمت الفكرة وشغلت بالي ، فكنت أعصر ذاكرتي لأستقطر منها ما اختزنته من أيام طفولتي إلى شيخوختي، وكلما ذكرت حادثة دونتها في إيجاز ومن غير ترتيب - فلما فرغت من ذلك ضممته إلى مذكراتي اليومية، ثم إلى ترتيبه وكتابته من جديد على النحو الذي يراه القارئ، من غير تصنع ولا تأنق.
