صدرت طبعته الأولى منذ مايقرب من 70 عاما، بتحرير العالم والمؤرخ حسين مؤنس ، الذي بدأ الكتاب بالتساؤل عن حدود الشرق الذي يعنيه العنوان، مؤكدا أنها ليست حدودا جغرافية، فمراكش وهي تمتد ناحية الغرب إلى أبعد مما تمتد فرنسا وبريطانيا إنما هي جزء من الشرق، بل أنك إذا نزلت أرضها وجدت نفسك في صميم الشرق وأنت بعد على ساحل الأطلسي.
ويتساءل كذلك شرق بالنسبة إلى ماذا؟ وغرب بالقياس إلى ماذا؟ أليست أوروبا شرقًا بالنسبة إلى أمريكا؟ وأليست هذه شرقًا بالنسبة إلى الصين واليابان؟
ويضيف: "هناك عالمان مختلفان، إذا انتقل الإنسان من واحد منهما إلى الآخر أحس أنه في جو جديد، وأحس أنه بالفعل بين ناس يختلفون عن أولئك الذين خلفهم وراءه. هناك عقلية شرقية وأخرى غربية".
