هذه الرواية عبارة عن قصة حقيقية جرت أحداثها في الفترة إبان الحرب العراقية الإرانية مرورا بحرب الكويت إلى الآن . تدور الأحداث حول أسرة عراقية يتم اعتقال الأب من قبل النظام ويحكم عليه بالأعدام ثم يتمكن من الهرب إلى إيران مع جماعة من المناهضين إلى أن يتم القبض عليه وتنفيذ حكم الإعدام في بيته أمام ناظري زوجته وأولاده الذين يتم إعتقالهم والزج بهم في السجن . تخرج الزوجة والأبناء لتجد جميع الأبواب قد أغلقت في وجهها ، فلا أحد يريد إيواءهم خوفا من بطش الأمن . يتم إعتقال الأم مرة ثانية لانضمامها لجماعة كانت تسعي للقيام بثورة وقلب نظام الحكم وتورطها في عمليات عسكرية ضد قوات النظام ويحكم عليها بالسجن سبع سنوات يتعرض خلالها الأطفال لحالة من الضياع والتشتت فيستقر بهم الحال في بيت جدهم الذي يلقون فيه معاملة سيئة من زوجات أعمامهم إلى أن يأتي عم آخر ويأخذهم إلى قرية آخرى بعيدة فتقسو عليهم زوجته بدورها وتعاملهم معاملة العبيد . سنوات العتمة تعبر عن الفترة التي عاشها هؤلاء الأطفال حتى خروخ الأم من المعتقل والسفر إلى إيران ثم العودة إلى العراق بعد رحلة معاناة شاقة ومؤلمة ...
