تكمن ميزة الجغرافية العلمية في أنها حدّدت هدفاً دراسياً شاملاً لحجم، ذي ثلاثة أبعاد، طولي، عرضي، وعامودي ، تُعتبر عناصره على علاقة فيما بينها :
السطح، ويشمل أشكال التضاريس الأرضية، الهيدروغرافيا /المحيطات، البحار.../، وكل أشكال الحياة البشرية ، الحيوانية والنباتية.
العامودية، وتشمل الجو والتربة وما تحتها.
وهكذا، اتّجه الفكر الجغرافي إلى مقاربة تركيبية للوسط الطبيعي. ليس المهم أن نعدّد مكوّنات هذا الوسط ، أو أن ندرسها كلاّ بمفرده، فكل عنصر يُعالجه علم تخصّصي: الفيزياء، الجيولوجيا، علم التربة ، علم النبات ... بل أن نحدّد العلاقة بينها. فمفهوم البيئة كان موجوداً ضمنياً في منطلقات الجغرافية العلمية.
