ترددت كثيرا وأنا أفكر في عنوان مناسب لهذا الكتاب، وقد استقر رأيي في النهاية علي اسم (ليالي سان استيفانو.. في صحبة نجيب محفوظ) وبرغم لقاءاتي اليومية الصيفية السكندرية مع نجيب محفوظ بداية من عام 1977 كانت في ثلاثة مواقع ـ الأولى في كازينو "بترو"، والثانية في كازينو "الشانزليزيه"، والثالثة في كازينو "سان استيفانو" ـ فقد كان التلاحم الحقيقي بيني وبين الأستاذ في الموقع الثالث.
بدأت صحبتي الحميمة للأستاذ، قرابة سبع سنوات، تباعدت بعدها الصحبة الصيفية اليومية، بعد "ضربة سكين" غبية طائشة في رقبته عام 1994، من شاب جاهل أحمق لم يقرأ كلمة واحدة للأستاذ، وهكذا انقطعت ندوته الصيفية إلى غير رجعة.
هكذا تواصلت حواراتي مع نجيب محفوظ ، ولم أستثن سؤالا واحدا رغبت في طرحه عليه، كان يعشق الديمقراطية وحرية التعبير، كان يتقبل من أعضاء الندوة بعض النكات والقفشات والنقد الزائد عن الحد.. وعندما أبديت دهشتي قال لي بتلقائية الفنان الواعي: "نحن هنا في برلمان "سان استيفانو"، وهو بديل برلماتنا الزائفة .. لا إبداع بدون حرية تعبير، ولا نهضة بدون صندوق انتخاب شفاف ونزيه .. كل واحد يعبر عن نفسه من منظور ثقافته وإدراكه الخاص".
وفي سبتمبر 1988، وقبل أن يحصل على جائزة "نوبل" بشهر، قررت أن أجمع حصاد حواراتي معه في شرائط مسجلة، تكون بمثابة شهادة أمينة لأديب كبير، عاصر كل ما جرى في القرن العشرين في مصر والعالم العربي والعالم كله، وعبر عن رؤيته من منظور أدبي واقعي مستنير في عشرات الروايات ومئات القصص القصيرة، وها أنا أقوم الآن بإفراغ هذه الشرائط في كتاب، يقدم صورة صادقة وأمينة لتجربة إبداعية عالمية، استحقت جائزة "نوبل"، وترجمت في أكثر من أربعين لغة مختلفة.
