"دانيال ديفو" 1660-1731 ولد في لندن وسط عائلة متواضعة. انطلق "دانيال ديفو" في البداية في مجال التجارة وفتح دكاناً لتجارة الأقمشة والخردوات. ولكن في عام 1692، اضطرته كارثة مالية إلى البحث عن أنشطة أخرى. هائماً بالسياسة، أخذ في كتابة مقالات النقد –التي أودت به إلى السجن عدة سنوات- وكذلك بعض التجارب القصصية والعديد من السير الذاتية. بالغا من العمر ستين عاما، ومدفوعا بحاجته إلى المال، كتب المؤلف الإنجليزي أولى رواياته "روبنسون كروزو" التي حققت نجاحاً متوسطاً. على عكس أعمال "دانيال ديفو" التالية، أخذ هذا العمل بعداً خرافيا الذي يمثل اليوم-في الحقيقة- نهجاً للأدب العالمي.
كان "روبنسون" المراهق يحلم بأن يجوب العالم. ذات صباح رحل غير مكترث بتوسلات أبويه. للأسف!
بعد سنوات قليلة غرقت سفينته. جزيرة مهجورة بعيدة عن العالم وعن أي رفيق، لا يوجد غير الوحدة. ها هو "روبنسون" يُعاقب بشدة على روحه المغامرة. لكن كيف لا يرى في هذا تحديا جديداً؟ لأنه على هذه الجزيرة البعيدة عن الحضارة يلزم بناء كل شيء.
