يُعَدُّ كِتابُ «الوَحْدة الإِيطالِية» ﻟ «بولتن كنج» مِنَ الكُتبِ التَّارِيخيةِ الهامَّةِ التي تَتبَّعَتْ بالتَّفْصيلِ تارِيخَ الوَحْدةِ الإِيطالِية؛ تِلكَ الحَركةِ التي امتَدَّ تارِيخُها عَلى مَدى نِصفِ قَرْن، ونادَتْ بالتحرُّرِ والاسْتِقلالِ والتخلُّصِ مِنَ الحُكمِ الاسْتِبداديِّ المُطلَق، شَأنُها شَأنُ الحَرَكاتِ الثَّوْريةِ الأُخْرى التي شَهِدَتْها المُجْتمعاتُ الأُورُوبيَّةُ في بِداياتِ القَرنِ التاسِعَ عشَرَ المِيلادِي. وقَدْ عُنِيَ «طه الهاشمي» بتَلْخيصِ هَذا الكِتابِ ونَقْلِه إلى اللُّغةِ العَرَبية؛ لِمَا يَتضمَّنُه مِن شَرْحٍ وافٍ للعَوامِلِ التي ساعَدَتْ إيطاليا عَلى تَحقيقِ الوَحْدة، وأنْ تتَّخِذَ مِن روما عاصِمةً لَها عامَ ١٨٧١م، بَعدَ أنْ نَجحَتْ في التخلُّصِ مِن حُكمِ نابليون، ثُمَّ الإِمْبراطُوريةِ النِّمْساوِيةِ التي سَيْطرَتْ عَلى مَقالِيدِ الحُكمِ في البِلادِ مُنذُ انْعِقادِ مُؤتَمرِ فيينا عامَ ١٨١٥م. كَذلِكَ يَتناوَلُ الكِتابُ بإِسْهابٍ الأَحْوالَ الاجْتِماعِيةَ والاقْتِصاديةَ التي عاشَتْها غالِبيةُ المُدنِ الإِيطالِيةِ إبَّانَ تِلكَ الفَتْرةِ مِن تارِيخِها.
