أختلف الباحثون في تحديد زمن دخول اليهود عالم الإستشراق،يرى الدكتور علي إبراهيم النملة أن/دخول اليهود مضمار الإستشراق إنما تدفعه بواعث عرقية قديمة،لم تكن وليدة القرون المتأخرة ،وأن اليهود ظلوا يتطلعون للعودة إلى خيبر والمدينة عن طريق القدس والجليل/؛مستشهدا بموقف وزير دفاع الكيان الصهيوني موشي ديان والحاخام الأكبر شلومو عزرين بعد سقوط القدس عام 1967،حين أدى الاثنان صلاة الشكر عند حائط البراق وقال:اليوم فتحت الطريق إلى بابل ويثرب/ /وهناك من يرى أن دخول اليهود حلبة الإستشراق ،جاء في أعقاب تحرير يهود أوروبا الوسطى والغربية ،ثم دخولهم الجامعات،حيث وجدت فيهم الحركة الإستشراقية ما لم تجده في سائر المستشرقين ،وذلك بسبب تقارب اللغة العربية من لغة ديانتهم العبرية،فكان من الطبيعي أن يتفهم اليهودي الظواهر اللغوية العربية أفضل من الأوروبي الغربي
