لقد دامت عاطفة جبران خليل جبران تجاه الأديبة مي زيادة زهاء عشرين عاما دون أن يلتقيا إلا في عالم الفكر والروح والخيال الضبابي إذ كان جبران في مغارب الأرض مقيما، وكانت مي في مشارقها، كان في أمريكا، وكانت في القاهرة. لم يكن حب جبران وليد نظرة فابتسامة فسلام فكلام، بل كان حبا نشأ ونما عبر مراسلة أدبية طريفة ومساجلات فكرية وروحية ألفت بين قلبين وحيدين وروحين مغتربين، ومع ذلك كانا أقرب قريبين وأشغف حبيبين.
كان طبيعيا جدا أن يتعارف بطلا هذا الحب عن طريق الفكر والنشر في أوائل هذا القرن بعد أن أصاب كل منهما شهرة كبيرة.. كانت مي معجبة بمقالات جبران وأفكاره فبدأت بمراسلته عقب إطلاعها على قصته (الأجنحة المتكسرة) التي نشرها في المهجر عام 1912م، كتبت له تعرب عن إعجابها بفكره وأسلوبه ومن هنا كانت البداية، ومن ثم التواصل بالرسائل التي كان كل منهما يبحث فيه عن روح الآخر في يقظته وأحلامه كان كل منهما يسعى لرؤية ذاته في روح صاحبة حتى لكأن تلك الروح هي المرآة التي ينعكس على صفحتها نور الآخر.
