أنا مدين لمهنتي الطبية في إتاحة الفرصة لي للتواصل مع الآخرين، والتحدث إليهم، والإنصات إلى معاناتهم وعذاباتهم وأوجاعهم، لكنني في كتاباتي كنتُ أؤكد على ضرورة أن نحافظ على الأمل الهش الذي بقي لدينا. لم أكنْ أدوّن القصص والروايات انطلاقاً من اليأس والقنوط بل انطلاقاً من إحساسي بالأمل، وهو ليس الأمل الساذج، الغيبي، الذي يتشبث به المؤمنون بالقضاء والقدر، بل الأمل الناجم عن إدراك حركة التاريخ والإيمان بقدرات الإنسان وصلابته، وكان أبطال قصصي ورواياتي يكشفون من خلال أفعالهم عن ثقتهم بأنفسهم، وعن قدرتهم على تجاوز ظروف حياتهم المحيطة بهم. وكنتُ ولا أزال أتذكر فريدا كالو، الفنانة المكسيكية، التي تعرضتْ لظروفٍ صحيةٍ قاسية ولحادثة جعلتها تعيش مستلقيةً على ظهرها في السرير زمناً طويلاً... لكنها لم تستسلمْ لتلك الظروف القاسية وبقيت تصارع العذاب والألم وتعشق الحياة والفن، وكانت خير من عبّر عن ذلك من خلال لوحات فنية فريدة جعلتها محط اهتمام نقاد الفن. كانت تتجاوز معاناتها مع المرض، ونزق زوجها، وعلاقاته الغرامية غير الشرعية، من خلال الرسم والرسم والرسم.
أنا أعتقد أن الأدب هو وسيلتنا الوحيدة لنداوي به جراحاتنا، أوجاعنا، مآسينا. إنما لابد لنا أن نتنفس عبر الحكايات التي نرويها، ونغني ونرقص ونلهو ونمرح ونصرخ. أعتقد أنه يتعين على الكاتب أن يكتشف تقنيات من شأنها أن تجعل الواقع أكثر قوةً وكثافةً مما هو عليه، أي أنك تجربه في الكتابة بصورةٍ أقوى مما تفعله خارج الكتابة. أو، بكلمةٍ أخرى، أن نعيد إنتاجه بطريقة حيوية تثير مخيلة القارئ وتدفعه إلى التأمل وتوجيه الأسئلة.
